We face a devastating global pandemic, a long overdue reckoning over racial justice, political upheaval, and a climate crisis. The possibility of a just, democratic future on a healthy planet hangs in the balance. It’s time to reclaim what is—and is not—a matter of fact. My book project, How to Build a Fact, is a two hundred and seventy year journey uncovering the origins and the current erosion of the modern fact. It also reveals that there are always people struggling to maintain the light of knowledge and the hope for a fair, open society, even in the darkest of times.
